Lake Houston from Lakeview Park, 5-mile excercise

Details:

We will put-in at Tiki Island, paddle around Deer Island, to Galveston, have lunch, paddle to Offatts Bayou and back to Tiki Island. There are bird rookeries on both North and South Deer Islands. These islands are protected habitat so don't plan to land. On prior trips we have seen great egrets, great blue herons, roseate spoonbills, lots of tricolored herons, little blue herons, snowy egrets, black skimmers, oystercatchers and flocks of white ibis. You will need to be able to paddle 12 miles and handle you boat in windy, choppy conditions. You will be up to a mile from shore during a 2-mile crossing.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Directions -- Take I-45 South toward Galveston, take the Tiki Island exit, Turn right on a feeder road, go past the boat ramp. Look for a white SUBARU Outback (License M22-VDY). There is a service station at the exit.&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Hazards -- We will be crossing the Intracostal Waterway. There is a lot of small boat traffic in the area. Oyster Reefs - These are both above and below the water. Submerged reefs can usually be seen as a darker area. &amp;lt;br&amp;gt;&amp;lt;br&amp;gt;Trip Leader……………..... 24-1-28 Lake Houston ACA Report

Let's get this thing going. Please arrive in time to unload, gear up and get on the water at 10 AM. 5 miles of pleasant paddling on Lake Houston from Lakeview Park in Atascocita just a mile from West Lake Houston Parkway.

I always incorporate a bio-break on my events. It can be done in the forested areas, but be prepared to step out in maybe a foot of water in the woods. Friends will assist as best designated. Guests – You are welcome to join us for a couple of paddle trips. As per our insurer, we will collect $10 from each non-American Canoe Association (ACA) participant and send it to the ACA. Hopefully you will then join HASK and continue paddling with us.
