Trip Description: Let's paddle Christmas Bay around Mud Island for Bill Ohsie's birthday. This ~8 mile Level 2 paddle is a pretty trip with lots of birds, oysters, and some shallow water. If there is not enough water to get around the north end of Mud Island, we will either paddle eastward past Bird Island to a beach on the bay side of west Galveston Island or backtrack through Titlum Tatlum Bayou for a lunch stop.

Let's meet at the boat ramp in San Luis County Park at 9:30 am to launch at 10:00 am.

Directions to the Put-in: From Houston take I-45 south to Galveston, exit at 61st street and take a right onto 61st , drive to Seawall Blvd and take a right. Drive to the southwest end of Galveston Island, about 25+ miles.  Cross the bridge at San Luis Pass. There is a $2 toll.  Immediately after crossing the bridge, take the first right (Access road 7) and an immediate right heading back on the feeder toward the pass. There will be a sign for the San Luis Pass County Park public boat ramp. Turn left towards the boat ramp, drop off your kayak and gear to the left of the ramp and then park. A small campground store and flush toilets are located next to the parking area.

If you're coming via Surfside, Tx, take the Blue Water Highway (CR 257) to San Luis Pass, about 13.5 miles. Do not cross the toll bridge to Galveston; the San Luis Pass Park is on the left immediately before the bridge.

Hazards: Hot weather, some boat traffic, sting rays, oyster reefs.  Slight chance of bears, rattlesnakes, and tarantulas. Be sure to bring lunch, LOTS of water, a spare set of dry clothes and good sun protection.  Water temperatures are warm. We'll stop for lunch on a shell beach or island. It's helpful to get a lay of the land on Google Earth ahead of time.

Lat - lon of the put-in is   29° 4.807'N,  95° 7.566'W

This is our aspirational paddling route, probably counterclockwise. Tide is at a good level for the start of our trip but it falls all day.

Here is a gpx file of our planned route in case anyone wants to load this into a Garmin GPS
