Directions to the Put-in: From Houston
To get to the put-in, take I-10 east from Houston and take Exit 803 (FM 565) right before the Old and Lost River Bridge. Go north on FM 565 3.5 miles to FM 1409. Turn right on FM 1409 and drive about 1/2 mile to the bridge over Old River. The put-in is on the right before you cross the river. Be careful of possible ruts and mud on the bank. Don't try to drive too far down the sloppy bank. Park where you can and we can haul the boats to the river bank. Bank will be muddy and slippery, so be careful putting and taking out. There are no facilities at all at the put-in but there are decent gas stations at I-10 and FM 565. Bring lunch, plenty of water, and good sun protection.
Hazards: Fire Ants, snakes, debris in the water - wear good closed-toe shoes. Slight chance of bears, rattlesnakes, and tarantulas. Have a dry bag with spare dry clothing in your boat. The put-in is ugly, rutted, and trashy. Our parked cars will be unattended, so leave nothing visible inside. If you are concerned about the safety of your car, we can try to find a more respectable place to leave it in the little nearby town. Here's our put-in and paddle route:
