The Event:  Lake Powell Houseboat and Sea Kayak Trip – September 8-14

Karen Amundson has reserved a Navigator houseboat out of Bullfrog for 7 days and 6 nights.  So far, seven people have signed up and we have room for only one more. Contact Leslie Taylor if you want to get on the wait list. The Navigator is rated to sleep 10 people, but we are capping participants at 8 because the boat has only one bathroom.  This is not a Rocky Mountain Sea Kayak Club (RMSKC)  trip, but some members are going.

Payment schedule:

As soon as possible: $700 to Karen to cover the $5,275 already paid by credit card in 2024 to secure the rate before 2025 increases.  This covers rental, taxes, fees and cleaning.

August 2025: $200 to $300 as your share of estimated gas, insurance, ice, and O&C (omissions and contingencies).

Final adjustments at the end of the trip when we know what was spent on gas. The final cost is estimated to be $870 each for 8 people or $995 for 7. The cost has increased quite a bit since RMCC did the 2023 trip.  However, commercial trips average $400 a day, so it is still reasonable. Shared dinners and other items would be like past RMSKC houseboat trips. Some may choose to sleep in tents on the shore, some on the decks and some inside.

Trip Plan:  Most of us could camp in Starr Springs Campground 27 miles short of Bullfrog the night before our launch. We will launch September 8 from Bullfrog and focus on the canyons beyond Escalante but short of Oak Canyon.  These would include Ribbon Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Llewelyn Gulch, Reflection Canyon (leads to Cottonwood Gulch), Hidden Passage Canyon, Music Temple Bar, and Anasazi Canyon (leads to Moepitz Canyon and Lehi Canyon if there is enough water).  Day paddles will likely be about six to eight miles each.

We cannot get as far as Ribbon Canyon from Bullfrog on the 1st day, so we would try to stop at Iceberg Canyon to camp and possibly explore there on the way out of Bullfrog.  Or we can catch it on the return.  It has petroglyphs and ruins to explore.
