About this event

Breaking News !!!  We no longer have to use the muddy stinky FM 1409 bridge put-in for this trip. The City of Mont Belvieu has built a beautiful new park on Old River with good parking and a dryfoot kayak launch.

Trip Description:
We will park and begin at the NEW Joe Matthews Park in Chambers County, TX and loop upstream and downstream for a Level 1 9 mile trip.  Old River is a quiet meandering long-abandoned channel of the Trinity River. This will be a mostly sheltered paddle with lots of cypress trees.  There are some trees/logs in the river to paddle around. We will eat lunch either on a sandbar or back at the put-in, depending on time. We can add or subtract mileage as the group wishes.

Directions to the Put-in:  enter Joe Matthews Park Mont Belvieu TX into your favorite navigation machine.

Lat-lon of the launch site is  29° 52.354'N    94° 50.792'W

There are probably good restrooms at the new park, but I haven't actually been there yet..Bring lunch, plenty of water, and good sun protection.

Hazards:
Fire Ants, snakes, debris in the water - wear good closed-toe shoes. Slight chance of bears, rattlesnakes, and tarantulas. Have a dry bag with spare dry clothing in your boat. even though the air is warm, dress as if you might be in the water, which is still chilly in the upper 50s.

Here's our put-in and paddle route. We will launch at Joe Matthews Park, paddle upstream to the obstruction (pipeline project), then head downstream to the confluence with The Cutoff, and return to the launch site.
