About this event

Directions: From downtown Houston, take I-45 South towards Galveston. It's about an hour drive due to morning traffic. Let's meet inside the Seawolf Park in Galveston, TX at 9am and be ready to launch soon thereafter. The park charges $7 day use fee per car. Bring a thermos with hot drink and pack a lunch for midway break.

This is an advanced trip likely L3/L4 conditions for those wanting a more authentic sea kayaking experience and a challenge, paddling open water in Texas winter conditions and potentially a windy day. Circumnavigation of Pelican Island and spoil island north of Pelican Island, approximately 12-13 miles.

This may be a potentially challenging paddle in semi-open or open waters. Air and water temperatures are likely to be cold, and wind/wave/swell conditions could reach L3/L4 description. Winds up to 15 knots and waves or swells less than 3 feet and distance in excess of 10 miles.

Therefore, participants should have a reliable self-recovery technique as well as training in assisting others in rescue situations, and sound sea kayaks with deck lines all round and buoyancy fore and aft. A working roll would be great. Paddlers should have spray skirts on and, ideally, wear a dry suit or at least a wet/neoprene top.

Hazards: Cold weather and cold water, likely windy at times, heavy boat traffic (in particular container ships and oil tankers). Boat traffic, and the crossing of boat lanes are extra hazards.

Be sure to bring lunch, lots of water (thermos with hot drink will be nice!), a spare set of dry clothes and good sun protection.  Water temperatures are cold and wearing a dry suit is strongly advisable. We'll stop for lunch on a shell beach or island. It's helpful to get a lay of the land on Google Earth ahead of time.
