Pleasant day paddle with open water navigation option.  Please let me know if you want to navigate.

Venue is Bayshore Park (5437 FM 646, Bacliff, TX 77518).The plan is to paddle from Bayshore Park out to Red Fish Island, eat lunch, and return by a different route if possible.  Weather conditions on the day will dictate the route.  I have picked a few points on shore and out in the bay to paddle to, just for practice.

Please arrive in time to be ready to launch by 9 AM.

All participants must bring a spray skirt and be prepared to use it if requested by Trip Leader  All participants must be able to do a wet exit, with spray skirt if necessary., Kayaks must have bow and stern bulkheads and deck lines. If your kayak does not qualify, please seek a loaner for this training.

This course offers an opportunity to practice using navigation skills.  THERE WILL BE NO PRE-TRIP TUTORIAL.  Questions can be addressed while paddling

  • Understanding marine charts
  • using chart and compass to plan and follow a course
  • estimating distances and time needed to cover them
  • piloting
  • dead reckoning

Hazards -- Heat illness, sunburnhyperthermia, pilings, boat traffic, Bring plenty of water, sun protection (sun cream, proper clothing, sun glasses, hat) and snacks. Some sort of sport drink with electrolytes (sugars and salts) strongly advised.
