Do good while paddling  one of the best sections of the San Marcos River. The history and beauty of this river stretch has earned designation as a Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPWD) river trail - the six mile Luling Zedler Mill River Trail.  We will be part of the annual Texas Rivers Protection Act (TPRA) annual river cleanup in where individuals and clubs clean up the entire San Marcos River before this trash can travel down the Guadalupe and litter our marshes, bays, and oceans.

I've found that all sorts of boats work well on this section.  Obviously, flatwater canoes and kayaks are easier to paddle.  Sit-on-tops (SOTs) are great cleanup work boats. HASK member Leslie Taylor is bringing an extra tandem SOT to lend out.  I'll paddle - kayak style - a tandem canoe that can serve as the trash barge.

Participants will be supplied trash bags.  Please bring your own garden gloves to protect hands.   Note, we will be taking out before the dam across from Zedler Mill (or an alternate site if construction is not completed as scheduled).  Thus - other than a possible downed tree or two - no portages!

TPRA offers free campsites in the Martindale are to folks who volunteer their time.  (See TRPA River CleanUp.)   However, for shorter travel for Houstonians, I will pick up trash bags and - for those who register and get me their shirt size - T-shirts ahead of time.  As time permits, I'm willing to offer tips on kayak strokes, rolls, and other maneuvers if wanted.  If COVID allows, we can eat together at one of Luling's best eateries.

Note: Leslie Taylor invites others to camp at San Marcus River Retreat.  She's reserved site #12 for Feb 26-27 and plans to share her camp kitchen which is well stocked with utensils and stoves and such.  On behalf of TRPA, Tom Goynes has opened his quiet campground - San Marcos River Retreat in Martindale, Texas - free of charge for river cleanup participants.  Due to COVID-19 vaccine concerns, the barbeque and meeting activities have been scaled back this year.

We will meet at 9:30am at the put-in to get ready and organize the < 3 mile shuttle (N95 equivalent masks w/ hopefully vaccinated drivers).

Put-in at Luling Alt 90 Bridge

From Luling, drive 2.6 miles on Highway 90 to City of Luling park/picnic area.  Turn on Luling side of Highway 90 bridge over San Marcos well before the bridge.  Vehicles bigger than 9.5 feet use unmarked gravel road on right.  Most vehicles use marked City of Luling park paved road on left where you go under bridge then go under bridge again to the launching are next to river.

Alt90 Put-In

Take out across from Zedler Mill in Luling

From Alt 90 put-in, go back to Highway 90.  Turn right and travel 2.6 miles before turning right on Highway 80.  Zedler Mill is on the right (Laurel Street) but best take-out is the boat ramp before the dam in the park area across the river (river right) from Zedler Mill.

Hazards -- Generally a quiet and beautiful paddle.  May be some moving water and downed trees to navigate.  Bring gloves and other protection to help pick up trash which may include sharp cans.  Avoid slipping on banks.  Watch for the somewhat rare possibility of critters in trees.
